Sofia Ribeiro launches the new project of Orquestra Jazz de Matosinhos which aims to give visibility to the Portuguese new generation of jazz. Sofia is the first guest of a cycle dedicated to the voice that presents some of the best soloists of the country at the Teatro Municipal de Matosinhos Constantino Nery.
With a steady trajectory in jazz, Sofia Ribeiro is acknowledged for her strong and emotional performances and for a contained and intimate style that surpasses the boundaries between music genres. Widely applauded by the critics, she graduated in ESMAE – Superior School of Music, Arts and Performance of Porto and frequented international schools in Boston, Brussels, Paris and Barcelona. In 2005 she recorded her first album under her own name, Dança da Solidão, in collaboration with the composer Marc Demuth.
It is a unique opportunity to listen to Sofia Ribeiro accompanied by a wider instrument formation, OJM, which allows a new perspective and more complex arrangements of the soloist’s themes. In this concert Sofia re-interprets themes that the big band had already interpreted with the singer Maria João: Maria Beatriz (by Edu Lobo and Chico Buarque), and the standards Skylark and Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most.
The same applies to themes by the Brazilian Maria Rita and the Cape-Verdean Mayra Andrade. In Maria Rita’s case, Sofia interprets the themes Agora só Falta Você (by Rita Lee) and Casa Pré-Fabricada (by Marcelo Camelo). In Mayra Andrade’s case the chosen theme is Stória, Stória, from the singer’s album with the same title. Telmo Marques did the arrangements of the theme Beatriz; Carlos Azevedo did the arrangements of the theme Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most; all the other arrangements were done by Pedro Guedes.
In this concert in Matosinhos Sofia also presents some picks from her forth album, Ar (2012), with the Brazilian music as main reference: Mercedes (by Djavan), here with arrangement by Gileno Santana; A Medida da Paixão (by Lenine and Dudu Falcão), arranged by Andreia Santos.
Ar is another Sofia Ribeiro’s success. Produced in collaboration with the Colombian pianist Juan Andrés Ospina, this album was awarded the Revelation prize from the prestigious French magazine Jazzman. It thus makes sense to include in this concert with OJM some of Sofia’s original themes recorded in this album, marked by the simplicity of the lyrics or by a contagious rhythm: Os Teus Olhos, based on a poem by Florbela Espanca (arrangement by Paulo Perfeito), Bola de Chumbo (arrangement by Tomás Marques) and Adversidade (arranged y Telmo Marques)
